What is a Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc (Slipped Disc)?
A prolapsed interertabral disc occurs when the tough, fibrous outer part of the disc ruptures, which allows the gel-like core to bulge and protrude outwards. This damaged disc can then put pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fibre. This means that not only can a slipped disc cause pain in the area of the disc, but also in the area that the nerve controls, such as an arm or leg. It should be noted that “slipped disc” is something of a misnomer, as the disc is unable to slip or slide. Although a slipped disc can occur anywhere along the spine, it most often occurs in the lower back, between the fourth and fifth vertebrae.
The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain—and possibly tingling, numbness, or weakness—that originate in the lower back and travel through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg. Sciatica (pronounced sigh-at-eh-kah) is not a medical diagnosis in and of itself—it is a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Common lower back problems that can cause sciatica symptoms include a lumbar herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, or spinal stenosis. Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and irritating to constant and incapacitating. Symptoms are usually based on the location of the pinched nerve. While symptoms can be painful and potentially debilitating, it is rare that permanent sciatic nerve damage (tissue damage) will result, and spinal cord involvement is possible but rare.

The type of fracture in the spine that is typically caused by osteoporosis is generally referred to as a compression fracture. A compression fracture is usually defined as a vertebral bone in the spine that has decreased at least 15 to 20% in height due to fracture. These compression fractures can occur in vertebrae anywhere in the spine, but they tend to occur most commonly in the upper back (thoracic spine), particularly in the lower vertebrae of that section of the spine (e.g. T10, T11, T12). They rarely occur above the T7 level of the spine. They often occur in the upper lumbar segments as well, such as L1.
Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.) is a term used to describe a form of arthritis which mainly affects the joints in the spine. It usually affects the little joints between the vertebrae of the spine and tends to diminish the movement which takes place at these joints. A.S. is a chronic (i.e. continuing, long-lasting) condition, but in most cases it is mild in its effects. With early diagnosis and proper management the pain and stiffness of A.S. can be minimised and the disability and deformity considerably reduced or even prevented.
As with other forms of arthritis, the cause is not known, but there appears to be a hereditary factor (gene HLA B27 occurs in 90% of people with A.S, although having the gene doesn't necessarily mean you will develop A.S).
